Today the University of Calgary Athletic Department announced that the men’s soccer and women’s field hockey team will remain varsity sports at the University for the 2009-10 seasons. This is fantastic news and is a great day for our sport locally, provincially and nationally. However, we need your help more than ever! In order to ensure that we have a successful 2009-10 season and to ensure the long term sustainability and viability of the Dino team, we still need to make certain that we meet our fundraising goals. Every Dollar helps to Preserve The Species.

The Dino Women’s Field Hockey Alumni Association (DWFHAA) had the opportunity to meet with the Athletic Director and presented their proposed budget and alternative funding model. In that proposed budget was an action plan to raise funds by the following actions:

• Pursuit of grants and bursaries
• Adopt-A-Dino
• Casinos
• Personal and corporate donations
• Player levies
• Other fundraising activities such as staffing Saddledome events, conducting the annual Dino Jamboree and organizing tournaments

Even with the above, this is not enough. We still require continued support from our Alumni and other members in the field hockey community. Many of you have already contributed financially, through volunteer hours or with messages of support and we THANK YOU for that. For those of you who have not yet had the chance to do so or are waiting for the right time; we ask you to please consider taking that step and helping support the program as soon as you can. We need donations to be receipted by June 1st, 2009 so that we have enough time to ensure the proper funding and allocation of monies for the upcoming 2009-10 season. If that’s not the right time for you, your contribution will still be very important for 2010 and beyond. If you have the resources to support this program here are a number of ways you can help.

• Make a monthly or one-time donation via PayPal using the links below. With PayPal you can use a credit card, debit your chequing account or use your PayPal balance to make a contribution
• Send donations by cheque to the Preserve The Species Campaign
• Contribute via the Athletic Department's Adopt-A-Dino Program if you'd prefer a tax receipt
• Make a donation by credit card or cheque to the University of Calgary with the direction that the funds are to go the field hockey program and you will receive a tax receipt (this can be done either through the Faculty of Kinesiology or the University directly)
• Become a corporate sponsor or tell your employer about the opportunity to sponsor the team
• Contribute to the Endowment Fund or get a group together to do so to provide long term annual scholarships and bursaries for current and future athletes (minimum $20,000)
• Participate in fundraising activities (we would love to see you at a Casino)
• Spread the word in the community that now is the time to support field hockey in Calgary
• Come out to field hockey events at the University pitch and show your support for our sport (we have been the only team who has not had any gate admission fees)
• Participate in weekly alumni games in September and October against the current Dinos team (who cares what year you actually played- we would love to see and meet you!)

We understand that most people would like a tax receipt and to do so we recommend donating through the University of Calgary Adopt-A-Dino Program or a direct donation to the school. The DWFHAA has confirmed with the Athletic Director that any money donated through the University will be directly allocated to the field hockey team. There are no administration fees or other charges deducted from the donation unless a donor of the Adopt-A-Dino Program opts to obtain a benefits package. If a donor selects the benefits package then there will be a $40-$50 administration fee. For the sake of record keeping and if you decide to donate directly to the University, we recommend you notify us so that we may track all donations and keep the University accountable for the correct allocation of funds.

As a final note the DWFHAA would like to thank everyone who has helped to “Preserve The Species”. Although the last two weeks has been devastating and has required the work and extra effort by many people in our community, this roller coaster ride has also brought us together. As a community we have worked in cohesion and realized that we do in fact want there to be a continued elite University field hockey program in Calgary. For those of us who are alumni; we have recognized what a wonderful opportunity we had being a varsity athlete and the amazing experiences we were privy too and now we want all future athletes and potential players to be able to say the same thing.
