Dinos FHC

There’s a lot of great news coming out of the end of the Dinos 2007 campaign. Not only did the Dinos break their 4-year winless streak in their final game, they did so in style by knocking off perennial powerhouses the UVic Vikes by a 2-1 score. How does 9 goals in 12 games strike you? Or a shut-out against UA on their turf?

Alright then, we’ll bring out the hardware. In head coach Jenn Swagar’s rookie year, she has been named Canada West Coach of the Year. From the goDinos article:

Swagar was hired in April, taking over a program that had gone a combined 0-25-2 since that last victory. The team managed only one goal in each of the past two seasons, and Swagar focused on improving every aspect of the program, from recruiting right through on-field execution. The Dinos improved significantly over the course of the season, culminating in Sunday’s upset win.

“Coach Swagar was committed to making a difference in the leadership of this team when she took over,” said University of Calgary Athletic Director Don Wilson. “She has clearly been recognized by her peers for that effort.”

Swagar shares credit with her outstanding coaching staff which includes long-time Calgary field hockey community member Amir Zaidi and Dino alumni Liz Allan and Natalie Peterson.

But wait: it gets better. Both Christen Robertson and Teryn Buna have been recognized as Canada West All-Stars. Robertson is the anchor of the Dinos defense with her experience and smarts, spreading her maturity and discipline throughout the entire team. Buna has helped bring a lifeless penalty unit corner to life with her deadly strikes and inspires her teammates through her sheer determination and hard work.
